An Affirmation is Simply a Statement of Belief
I’ve always believed in magic. When I wasn’t doing anything in this town, I’d go up every night, sit on Mulholland Drive, look out at the city, stretch out my arms, and say, “Everyone wants to work with me. I’m a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers.”
I’d just repeat these things over and over, literally convincing myself that I had a couple of movies lined up. I’d drive down that hill, ready to take the world on, going, “Movie offers are out there for me, I just don’t hear them yet.”
It was like total affirmations, antidotes to the stuff that stems from my family background.”
-Jim Carrey, Actor/Comedian
Scott Adams was a cartoonist enjoying modest success when in 1988 he put a new technique to the test. The technique was Positive Affirmation. Like you may be now, he was initially cynical but his inquiring mind decided to give it a try. He used the idea a few times, all successfully and then came the big one. He wrote down that he wanted to become “a famous syndicated cartoon artist”.
Anybody familiar with Dilbert knows that Scott did truly become a “famous syndicated carton artist”. Scott wanted to go further and so his next goal was to become: “the most successful comic artist in the world” In June 1996 The Dilbert Principle hit the number one slot on the Hardcover Non - Fiction list of the New York Times. It stayed in the top three all summer and by November, Scott Adams had the top two slots when Dogberts Top Secret Management Handbook was a sell out success.
By most peoples definition, he was at least for a short period “the most successful comic artist in the world”.
How does an affirmation work? Repetition. Jim verbally repeated what he believed would become true. In fact, he was so sure of himself, he wrote himself a check for $10 million dollars. Scott wrote his beliefs down on paper and repeated them 15 times a day. Within weeks things started to happen that would lead to the successful achievement of his goal.
If you would like to experiment with affirmations yourself, one of the best books I have found is called, “It Works”, by RH Jarrett.
Happy Manifesting!
